Asylum Seeker Hotel Numbers Plummet Amid Decreased Crossings

By Editor • August 27, 2026 • 1 min read

The Home Office has reported a significant reduction in the number of asylum seekers residing in hotels, with figures dropping by 50% over the past year to 16,000. This shift comes as the government intensifies efforts to close these controversial accommodations.

Additionally, small boat crossings to the UK have decreased by 23% compared to the previous year, reflecting a broader trend across Europe. Overall, 93,000 individuals are currently receiving asylum support, a decline of 12% from last year.

Work, study, and family visa grants have also seen reductions, with work visas down 18% to 235,000 and study visas down 11% to 383,000.
