Ismail Sabri Yaakob Faces Charges for Asset Concealment

Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Malaysia's former Prime Minister, has been charged with failing to declare assets valued at approximately $40 million. This marks him as the third ex-prime minister in Malaysia to confront criminal allegations post-office.
During a court appearance in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, the 66-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include concealing assets in nine different currencies and precious metals. His lawyer, Amer Hamzah Arshad, indicated that they would review the legality of the charge.
The bail was set at 300,000 ringgit ($74,504), and the court declined to seize his passport, citing no flight risk. Ismail Sabri, who served a brief 15-month term from August 2021 to November 2022, is scheduled to return to court on September 29. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of up to five years.
