In a significant move to enhance its artificial intelligence landscape, Brazil is committing approximately 2.3 billion reais ($444.2 million) to develop its supercomputing capabilities. This investment reflects a careful balancing act between US and Chinese technology, as announced by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's administration.
Of this total, 1.3 billion reais ($251 million) will fund a supercomputing infrastructure project in collaboration with China's Huawei Technologies and iFlytek, aimed at producing large language models for various applications. An additional 1 billion reais ($193.1 million) will be set aside for a supercomputer anticipated to be among the world's ten most powerful, to be situated in Rio Grande do Norte.
The Brazilian government aims to ensure diverse technological partnerships, with expectations that US firm Nvidia might win the tender for the supercomputer, highlighting the country's strategy to enhance data sovereignty.
