Calls for Independent Inquiry into Death of 5-Year-Old Hind Rajab Amid Israeli Military Investigation

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 2 min read

The tragic death of 5-year-old Hind Rajab in Gaza has sparked demands for an independent investigation, as her mother, Wesam Hamada, expresses deep dissatisfaction with the Israeli military's announced inquiry into the incident. Hind was killed after Israeli forces fired on her family's vehicle during an assault.

Wesam recalls her daughter’s haunting last words during a frantic phone call made in January 2024, when Hind begged for help, expressing fear, hunger, and pain. These recordings became emblematic of the human toll of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and were pivotal in raising international awareness.

According to reports, the Israeli military admitted to targeting the vehicle carrying Hind and her relatives, resulting in the deaths of all six occupants, including her cousin, Layan Hamada, as well as two paramedics who were dispatched to assist. However, both Rajab’s family and members of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society are skeptical about the efficacy and sincerity of the military's investigation.

Wesam questioned the delay in acknowledging the shooting, stating, "Why did the investigation and the acknowledgment of the shooting at Hind's car and at the paramedics come only after more than two years?" She views the military's acknowledgment as an attempt to deflect criticism from Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The story gained further traction following the release of recordings that captured the desperate pleas of Hind and Layan for help, culminating in the short film “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” which was nominated for an Oscar.

Hind was ultimately found dead in her family car, along with her relatives, twelve days after the attack. The two medics sent to aid them were also found deceased, their ambulance destroyed. Initial claims from the Israeli military that no troops were present in the area have been contradicted by investigations from the U.N. and other independent organizations.

Rana Al Faqih, a dispatcher who spoke with Hind during the crisis, emphasized the need for an impartial investigation to deliver justice. The military's announcement of two criminal probes into various incidents raises doubts, as historical data shows that prosecutions resulting from such investigations are exceedingly rare.

The Hind Rajab Foundation, advocating for justice, criticized the military’s internal investigations as fundamentally flawed. Wesam Hamada reflects on her loss, stating, "The pain is like the pain of every mother who has lost her child in Gaza," underscoring the widespread grief experienced by families in the region.
