Israeli Military to Investigate Deaths of Hind Rajab and Paramedics

The Israeli military announced on August 19, 2026, it will initiate criminal investigations into the tragic deaths of five-year-old Hind Rajab and 15 Palestinian paramedics during recent conflicts in Gaza. Both incidents have drawn significant international scrutiny.
Hind Rajab was killed in February 2024 along with her relatives as they attempted to escape Gaza City amidst an Israeli offensive. Eyewitness accounts reveal that Israeli troops opened fire on their vehicle, resulting in the deaths of Hind, her four cousins, and her aunt and uncle. Hind's cousin, Layan Hamada, made a desperate call to the Palestinian Red Crescent just moments before the shooting stopped, indicating that a tank was coming and her family had been attacked. Tragically, it would be 12 days before their bodies were located.
Similarly, in May 2025, 15 Palestinian paramedics lost their lives when Israeli forces fired on their vehicles in Rafah. Eyewitness footage showed the paramedics responding to retrieve casualties when they were targeted. In a harrowing twist, the military initially claimed the ambulances were acting suspiciously but later retracted this statement as evidence contradicted their narrative.
Despite these two investigations, the military has chosen not to pursue inquiries into other reported attacks, including those targeting aid workers from organizations like World Central Kitchen and Doctors Without Borders. The military's review covered 150 incidents, and only five cases were deemed worthy of further scrutiny, leaving many unanswered questions regarding other high-profile casualties, such as the deaths of journalists in a separate airstrike.
