Canberra Detective Sentenced for Perjury in High-Profile Case

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

Trent Madders, a senior detective with the Australian Federal Police (AFP), has been sentenced to four months in prison for committing perjury, which the presiding judge characterized as a "tragic misjudgement." Madders, aged 52, pleaded guilty to providing false sworn statements during a 2020 legal proceeding regarding evidence from a criminal investigation.

During the investigation of twin brothers Joshua and Kenan Tiffen, who were accused of secretly filming female tenants, Madders was responsible for overseeing the examination of crucial evidence including a laptop and mobile phone. However, he failed to ensure these devices were analyzed within the mandated timeframe and misled the court by asserting they had been examined on time.

Despite being confronted with emails contradicting his statements, Madders maintained his false account under cross-examination, ultimately admitting that his actions represented the "dumbest thing" he had ever done. His dishonesty not only impacted the credibility of police but also led to the eventual overturning of the Tiffen brothers' convictions after the evidence was deemed inadmissible.

On sentencing, Justice David Mossop emphasized the gravity of Madders's actions, describing them as undermining the integrity of the justice system. Prosecutor Keegan Lee highlighted that Madders's lies were intentional and sustained, while defense barrister Beth Morrisroe portrayed him as an overworked officer under considerable stress. Madders has been on suspension since being charged in 2024, and following his prison term, he will be subject to a good behavior order.
