US Army Reverts Drone Unit in Europe to Traditional Infantry Role Amid Strategic Shift

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 2 min read

The US Army is dismantling its drone warfare unit in Europe, signaling a strategic pivot back to traditional infantry operations. The 173rd Airborne Brigade, based in Italy and Germany, has been ordered to return to its roots after nearly a year of experimentation with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Initially formed in November 2024, a specialized battalion within the brigade focused on developing and deploying drones, inspired by Ukraine’s innovative tactics in its ongoing conflict with Russia. However, General Christopher LaNeve, the acting chief of staff, has directed the unit to realign with its core mission as an airborne infantry battalion, according to two unnamed U.S. officials.

This decision is part of a broader restructuring under LaNeve, who took command after the abrupt removal of General Randy George in April. Despite ongoing conflicts, such as those involving Iranian drone technology, the Army appears to be shifting focus away from dedicated drone units.

The 173rd Brigade had been at the forefront of drone experimentation, establishing an FPV drone lab in Italy and integrating artificial intelligence into its operations. Brigade leadership previously expressed enthusiasm about the potential applications of these technologies in modern warfare.

As the specialized drone battalion prepares to conclude its experimental phase, it will conduct two major exercises in Germany this month and next. The Army plans to consolidate the lessons learned from this initiative to inform future military strategies.

Critics of the decision note the evolving landscape of warfare, where drone capabilities are increasingly vital. The Army’s own statement emphasized that the unit's original mission was to absorb insights from unmanned systems, particularly those used effectively by Ukraine, and to provide feedback on U.S. military drone capabilities.

Following LaNeve’s memo outlining a vision for a modernized Army, some analysts question the absence of a focus on drone technology in future tactical frameworks. The memo posits that the Army must evolve to meet new warfare challenges but does not explicitly address the lessons from the recent drone operations.
