Cannes 2026: Leah Nelson’s 'Tangles' Secures Distribution Amid Festival Buzz

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival has seen a flurry of activity with notable acquisitions, including Leah Nelson’s animated feature, 'Tangles,' which has been picked up by Independent Film Company and Sapan Studio. This black-and-white hand-drawn film boasts a star-studded voice cast, including Abbi Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, and Beanie Feldstein, among others. 'Tangles' tells the poignant story of a mother and daughter grappling with an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The film is set to premiere in the Centrepiece section at TIFF before a planned awards season rollout later this year, with a wider release slated for early 2027.

Another noteworthy acquisition is Katharina Rivillis's debut film, produced by Wim Wenders, which explores the challenges faced by a German exchange student in New Mexico during the post-9/11 era. KimStim, an emerging indie distributor, has acquired this title and intends to release it theatrically in North America in 2027.

In the Un Certain Regard section, Zeitgeist Films, in collaboration with Kino Lorber, secured 'A Girl’s Story,' a film directed by Judith Godrèche that is adapted from a memoir by Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux. This reflective piece journeys through Ernaux’s life during a book tour and revisits her teenage years in 1958. The film is set for a New York release in April 2027, followed by a national rollout.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen's 'The Beloved' also caught attention, with Kino Lorber acquiring it for competition. Featuring Javier Bardem as a troubled filmmaker, the narrative explores themes of fatherhood and artistic integrity. The film is expected to have a qualifying run in 2026, leading into a broader North American release in 2027.

Diego Luna directed the immigrant drama 'Watermelon Pictures,' which follows a young Mexican woman seeking to reconnect with her mother in Spain. The film is set to screen at TIFF, though specific release dates remain unannounced.

Greenwich Entertainment acquired Kōji Fukada’s Japanese drama, which delves into the lives of an artist and an architect dealing with past relationships. This film is slated for U.S. and Canadian theatrical releases in early 2027.

Andy Garcia’s 'Sony Pictures Classics' acquisition is a nostalgic detective noir film titled 'Joe Diamond,' where Garcia not only stars but also wrote and directed. The film is described as a tribute to Los Angeles and the classic noir genre, with plans for future release announcements.

In a compelling directorial debut, Reed Van Dyk’s war film, based on a New Yorker article, showcases a U.S. Marine returning to Iraq to reconnect with a family affected by his past deployment. Kino Lorber has plans for a fall release as well as festival screenings.

Finally, 1-2 Special picked up 'A Man of His Time,' a historical drama from Emmanuel Marre inspired by his great-grandfather’s life during the Nazi occupation of France. This film, which won the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes, is anticipated to hit theaters next year. Another acquisition by 1-2 Special is the Chilean film 'Chile ’76' director Manuela Martelli's latest project, set in the aftermath of the Pinochet regime, showcasing the disappearance of a competitive skier in 1992.
