After captivating audiences at various film festivals, Orlando von Einsiedel’s documentary, ‘The Cycle of Love,’ is set for theatrical release, with hopes of making a splash at the Oscars. The film tells the extraordinary true story of P.K. Mahanandia, a Dalit artist, who in 1977 embarked on a remarkable 6,000-mile journey on a bicycle to reunite with his love, Swedish tourist Lotta von Schedvin.
The film's journey began last Labor Day Weekend at the Telluride Film Festival, where it garnered an enthusiastic response. Von Einsiedel, an Oscar-winning filmmaker known for his work on ‘White Helmets,’ was inspired to share this unique love story after meeting Mahanandia and von Schedvin in Sweden. The couple’s warmth and openness captivated him, leading to a desire to tell their story in a cinematic format.
To bring this tale to life, von Einsiedel and his crew shot over seven weeks in both India and Sweden, using various locations to represent the route Mahanandia took through the historic “hippie trail.” The crew embraced the documentary style, blending scripted reenactments with real-life interactions. “Nothing is scripted,” von Einsiedel stated, highlighting the authenticity in their storytelling approach. By engaging with local communities along the route, they captured spontaneous moments filled with genuine emotion and connection.
The documentary features the charming narration of the older P.K., whose charisma plays a crucial role in the film’s impact. Von Einsiedel noted that P.K.'s ability to connect with diverse people across cultures was essential to both his journey and the film’s narrative. “He charmed everyone he met,” said von Einsiedel, emphasizing the universal themes of love and hope that resonate throughout the film.
Despite its festival success, the film faced challenges in securing a theatrical distribution. The current landscape for documentaries is tough, with many distributors hesitant due to declining box office numbers. However, the enthusiastic reception at Telluride gave the filmmakers confidence to pursue a theatrical release, leading to a partnership with the service distributor Variance.
The film is set to premiere in U.S. theaters, starting at New York’s Angelica on August 28, followed by Q&A sessions with von Einsiedel and surprise guests. The plan is to expand into 20-30 additional markets, including major cities like Los Angeles and Boston. Variance president Dylan Marchetti expressed optimism, stating, “It’s a beautiful romantic universal story,” and emphasized the power of word-of-mouth promotion.
In preparation for the Oscars, the filmmakers have enlisted veteran campaign strategist Chris Albert to help generate buzz among documentary voters. Von Einsiedel believes that ‘The Cycle of Love’ is an uplifting narrative in a world often filled with negativity. “I wanted to tell a positive, joyful story,” he remarked, asserting that love transcends political divides and is a theme everyone can embrace.
