Case of Mad Cow Disease Confirmed in Dumfries and Galloway

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

Scottish authorities have announced the discovery of a classical mad cow disease case on a Dumfries and Galloway farm. The Scottish Government is implementing precautionary movement controls for the cow's offspring and cohort on the premises.

This incident was detected through routine surveillance and strict control measures already in place. Fortunately, the affected animal did not enter the human food chain, and Food Standards Scotland has assured the public that there is no risk to human health.

Agriculture Minister Jim Fairlie emphasized the importance of swift action, stating, “The fact we identified this isolated case so quickly is clear proof that our surveillance system for detecting this type of disease is working effectively.” The animal's owner has been commended for their prompt response, which aided in quick isolation.

The Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA) is currently investigating the disease's source. While the disease is not directly transmissible between animals, the affected cohorts will be destroyed in compliance with legal protocols.
