Celebrating Creativity: Belmond and Loewe Launch Artist Residency in Deià

The picturesque village of Deià on Mallorca's west coast has been a haven for artists and writers for centuries, influenced by its stunning landscapes and vibrant atmosphere. This summer, La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, is paying homage to this artistic legacy by collaborating with Spanish luxury brand Loewe to establish an annual artist residency program, kicking off with Japanese artist Kaori Juzu.

The journey to Deià from Palma de Mallorca is a visual treat, with the flat terrain giving way to the dramatic heights of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The town itself is characterized by its charming sand-toned houses and a historic church perched atop a hill, creating a serene backdrop for creativity.

Historically, Deià has drawn notable figures such as Frédéric Chopin and Robert Graves, who found inspiration and solace in its natural beauty. Continuing this rich tradition, Kaori Juzu, recognized for her intricate copper and enamel jewelry, has taken up residence at La Residencia. Nominated for the 2023 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, Juzu's artistic process involves fusing metals and applying powdered glass enamel to create her distinctive pieces.

Juzu's acclaimed work, a grid of 108 unique compositions, reflects her cultural heritage; the number 108 is significant in Japanese Buddhism. While in Mallorca, she has been experimenting with new colors and forms inspired by the local environment, gathering natural materials to inform her creations. "Before the gardeners arrive, I collect fallen leaves and blooms to inspire new color combinations for my work," she explains.

La Residencia's commitment to fostering creativity extends beyond Juzu, with plans to host other artists from the Loewe Craft Prize in the coming months, including ceramic artist Deirdre McLoughlin and textile artist Dahye Jeong. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the hotel, which previously collaborated with Galleria Continua to showcase various artists, further solidifying Deià's reputation as a nurturing ground for artistic talent.
