ECLAC Adjusts Latin America Growth Forecast for 2026

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has revised its growth forecast for the region, projecting a rate of 2.2% for 2026, slightly down from last December’s estimate. The UN agency anticipates a modest recovery to 2.5% in 2027, emphasizing that this growth rate is inadequate to significantly increase per capita income.
According to ECLAC, the region is on track to experience five consecutive years of growth averaging around 2.3%. The report highlights stark differences in growth prospects across subregions, with South America expected to grow by 2.5% in both 2026 and 2027, while the Caribbean shows impressive forecasts driven largely by Guyana’s booming oil sector.
However, the report points to structural issues such as low investment and productivity challenges as key factors in the region's sluggish economic performance. ECLAC's executive secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, called for increased investment to break the cycle of low growth.
