Moroccan Police Intensify Efforts to Block Migrant Crossings into Ceuta

In a significant crackdown, Moroccan authorities have detained 111 individuals attempting to cross into Ceuta, Spain's North African enclave, following a surge of social media posts urging mass crossings.

This incident occurred just two weeks after a staggering influx of over 72,000 migrants overwhelmed Ceuta, resulting in heightened tensions within the EU and sparking a wave of anti-immigration sentiments globally. Tragically, at least 96 migrants lost their lives during that attempt.

Among those apprehended were 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan nationals, arrested in the vicinity of Fnideq, a town close to the border. Reports indicate that Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse groups of migrants who had gathered on nearby hills.

In response to the situation, Spain has ramped up its security measures, deploying over 500 additional police officers and establishing a maritime barrier. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska emphasized the commitment to maintaining order and preventing future incidents.

As of now, approximately 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta, facing severe conditions as they seek refuge. The Spanish authorities have made it clear that those entering irregularly will not be permitted to stay or travel to mainland Spain, with plans for immediate repatriation to Morocco for those without legal status.
