Ceuta Protests Erupt as Migrant Tensions Rise

Amid escalating tensions in Ceuta, Spain's left-wing government has appealed for calm following violent clashes between locals and police during protests against the migrant crisis. The unrest comes in the wake of a massive influx of over 60,000 migrants from Morocco in July, which raised alarms across Europe.
Despite government claims that most migrants have left the small enclave, many remain on the streets, leading to heightened frustrations among residents. Protests intensified recently, with altercations breaking out on Thursday, resulting in injuries and several arrests of Moroccan migrants.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska emphasized the need for non-violence, stating, "Violence is not the answer" and urging peaceful resolution to the complex situation. Meanwhile, Ceuta’s local government head, Juan Vivas, supported the need for lawful expressions of discontent but condemned any acts of vandalism.
As right-wing factions call for the immediate deportation of migrants, the government insists that each migrant's case must be thoroughly assessed to determine eligibility for asylum or deportation, particularly for unaccompanied minors.
