Charges Filed Against Man for Coercing Teen to Murder Postal Worker

A Chicago man has been charged in connection with the tragic killing of postal worker Octavia Redmond, who was fatally shot on July 19, 2024. Lyndell DeYoung, 35, faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder after allegedly coercing a teenager to carry out the attack.
Redmond, a 48-year-old mother and wife, was ambushed during her mail route when the unnamed 15-year-old suspect fired multiple shots at close range. Despite efforts to save her, Redmond succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The teenager later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder earlier this year.
According to the Chicago Police Department, DeYoung planned the murder and was implicated by a witness. Investigators also found cellphone records that linked him to the crime. After his arrest, DeYoung reportedly provided detailed accounts of the motive and execution of the murder.
In pretrial hearings, it was revealed that the teen stated DeYoung had threatened him into committing the act. As the case unfolds, DeYoung has requested a trial, with his next court date set for September 17. Redmond’s family, described as “devastated” by her loss, is hopeful for justice, as advocates call for better protections for mail carriers.
