Civic Group Mobilizes for Recovery of Victims from 1942 Mine Disaster

A dedicated civic organization in Japan is spearheading efforts to recover the remains of victims from a tragic 1942 undersea mining disaster in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Chosei coal mine, which was flooded during World War II, claimed the lives of 183 individuals, including 136 from Korea, and their remains have remained entombed since the catastrophe.

Yoko Inoue, 76, a representative of the group, expressed the importance of recent DNA analysis initiated by the Japanese and South Korean governments on remains retrieved from the site. "We’ve managed to reach the stage of DNA analysis through the efforts of citizens," she stated, emphasizing the need for government involvement in future searches.

Despite overcoming significant challenges, including a tragic incident that halted their investigations, the group has continued to push for the establishment of a peace park at the site. Plans include preserving the area as a cultural property and conducting further underwater investigations, with hopes for renewed collaboration between Japan and South Korea.
