The innovative K-drama, "The Legend of Kitchen Soldier," is making waves on the global stage, marking a significant departure from traditional storytelling. After being selected as the sole K-drama for a Special Screening at Series Mania in Lille, its momentum continued as it clinched the Best Drama Series award at the Fifth Blue Dragon Series Awards on July 31.
Produced by Studio Dragon and released as a TVING original, the 12-episode series follows Kang Seong-jae, played by Park Ji-hoon, a young man whose military service turns into an unexpected culinary adventure. As he navigates through military life, a virtual quest screen guides him, unraveling hidden secrets within the base.
The series has seen remarkable international success, climbing to No. 2 on Disney+ Japan and ranking among the top three Korean dramas on HBO Max across 17 regions, notably in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The show's reach will expand further as chief producer Kim Tae-hoon participates in a creator talk at K-Brand Week in Poland on September 15.
What sets "The Legend of Kitchen Soldier" apart is its experimental approach to editing and storytelling. Executive producer Lee Hye-young emphasized the significance of the show's unique visual style, which serves as a core element rather than a backdrop. The production's lo-fi aesthetic enhances the comedic aspects while ensuring that the narrative remains cohesive.
Additionally, the cast, including established stars like Park Ji-hoon and Lee Sang-yi, was carefully curated to complement the show's dynamic style without being overshadowed by it. The narrative also breaks from K-drama norms by centering on comedy without relying on a romantic subplot, showcasing character depth and distinct motivations.
The series also integrates a K-pop group, Migak Boys, formed around the characters’ reactions to the protagonist's cooking, further engaging audiences through a blend of K-drama, K-pop, and culinary culture. As CJ ENM continues to push creative boundaries, the success of "The Legend of Kitchen Soldier" highlights the potential for diverse genres to thrive in the global entertainment market.
