Nwankpa Design: Where Architecture Meets Cultural Narrative

By Editor • August 30, 2026 • 1 min read

Nwankpa Design, a burgeoning architectural firm from Southern California, has secured a spot in the prestigious Wallpaper* Architects' Directory 2026, recognizing its innovative approach to design.

Founded in 2016 by Susan Nwankpa Gillespie, the practice emphasizes immersive experiences, crafting spaces that evolve as one traverses them. "Our approach treats space as moments in a larger narrative that unfold as you move through it," Gillespie explains.

The firm’s focus is on blending beauty with cultural storytelling, aiming to create environments that are not only visually striking but also rich in meaning. Gillespie states, "We are driven by the celebration of culture, the richness of heritage, and the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when tradition meets technology."

A prime example of this philosophy is Textile House #2 in Inglewood, California, inspired by a West African textile dress. The home marries minimalism with vibrant patterns, featuring a front facade that reflects its surroundings while incorporating graphic brick patterns reminiscent of woven textiles.

As the design transitions to the rear, modern elements come into play with wider gables leading to distinct living areas. This seamless integration of brick flooring throughout enhances the home's fluidity, blurring the lines between spaces.

Through its unique designs, Nwankpa Design showcases the interconnectedness of fashion and architecture, illustrating how cultural narratives can redefine contemporary spaces.
