Community Unites in Search for Missing Wagin Man as Hopes Fade

The search for 87-year-old James Ballantyne, who has been missing in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region, has been reduced significantly by police, raising concerns about his safety. Ballantyne, who lives with dementia, was last seen on Saturday morning in Wagin.

Initially, a comprehensive search operation involving drones, helicopters, and numerous volunteers was launched, drawing support from the local community and as far away as Perth and Bunbury. However, after six days of relentless searching, the authorities have acknowledged the grim reality that the chances of finding him alive are slim.

Acting Inspector Craig Wasley praised the community's remarkable response, stating, "The community was just absolutely amazing, searching outside their houses, sheds, laneways." Wagin's acting president, Bryan Kilpatrick, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the devastating impact of Ballantyne's disappearance on the tight-knit community.

As the search operations scale back, the focus will shift towards local inquiries. The family of Mr. Ballantyne expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support from volunteers and the police, acknowledging the incredible efforts made to locate him. While the air and external resources have retreated to Perth, local officers will continue to investigate, holding on to hope that someone may still have information that could lead to Mr. Ballantyne's whereabouts.
