Controversy Forces Delay of 'Big Break' Premiere Following Sponsor Withdrawal

The highly anticipated premiere of Golf Channel's 'Big Break x Good Good' has been abruptly postponed due to the withdrawal of its title sponsor, Golf Galaxy. This decision comes just hours before the scheduled airing on Tuesday, September 1. Golf Channel confirmed the delay in a statement, indicating the need for production adjustments following the sponsor's request to remove its branding from the show.
Golf Galaxy, owned by Dick's Sporting Goods, has no issues with Golf Channel itself but is distancing itself from Good Good Golf amid a backlash over a controversial advertisement. The ad featured a scene where Good Good golfer Alexis Miestowski was knocked down by co-founder Garrett Clark while he warned her not to touch his driver. The spot faced significant criticism online, including from the PGA Tour.
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp expressed disappointment in Good Good's handling of the situation, noting the fluidity of the circumstances surrounding the brand. The backlash is particularly concerning as Good Good is set to co-host the upcoming Good Good Championship, where the winner of 'Big Break x Good Good' will earn a sponsor's exemption into the tournament.
Good Good CEO Matt Kendrick acknowledged the backlash in a leaked email, stating that the ad was intended as a parody but failed to align with their values. Despite their explanation, many have questioned the rationale behind the ad's execution. Meanwhile, Dick's Sporting Goods has yet to comment on the implications of their withdrawal or the future of their partnership with Callaway, which approved the ad.
As the situation evolves, it remains unclear how Golf Channel will address the sponsorship void in 'Big Break x Good Good.' The delay could serve as a temporary solution, yet questions linger about the show's ultimate fate and its connection to the PGA Tour.
