Coral Reefs Face Unprecedented Threat of Irreversible Decline

Coral reefs are under severe threat, with bleaching events occurring so frequently that recovery is nearly impossible, according to a report from the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN). The report highlights that global coral coverage has plummeted to alarming levels, risking irreversible damage.
Lead author Manuel Gonzalez Rivero emphasized that while corals can recover if given adequate time, the doubling of bleaching events since 2010 has hindered this process. The latest bleaching in 2023 has affected 77 percent of coral reef areas worldwide, marking the most extensive event recorded.
Coral reefs are vital for ocean health, supporting over 25 percent of marine life despite occupying less than 1 percent of ocean floors. With rising global temperatures, the likelihood of further bleaching events this year is high.
