Coroner's Inquiry Highlights Medical Oversight in Fatal Adelaide Crash

A recent coroner's inquest into a tragic accident in Adelaide has revealed shocking lapses in medical responsibility that contributed to the death of 47-year-old Sohaila Mohammadi. The inquiry focused on Tristan Mourant, the driver who collided with the van carrying Mohammadi, who died from injuries sustained in the crash.
On January 21, 2022, Mourant struck the van on Main North Road, causing it to fishtail and ultimately burst into flames after crashing into a light pole and a tree. The inquest uncovered that Mourant had been diagnosed with bilateral retinal dystrophy, a condition affecting his vision. Despite being advised by three medical professionals that he was unfit to drive, none reported his condition to the Register of Motor Vehicles, which is a legal requirement under the Motor Vehicles Act 1959.
Coroner Mr. Whittle emphasized that Mourant knowingly disregarded medical advice, as evidenced by his application for a driver's license in May 2021, where he falsely declared he had no medical impediment. In his findings, Whittle stated, "Mr. Mourant knew he had medical advice not to drive,” and pointed out that had Mourant’s license been suspended, it is likely that Mohammadi would still be alive today.
Furthermore, the inquest revealed that the severity of the fire that engulfed the van made it impossible for her husband, Noor Ahmad, who was also injured in the accident, to save her. Whittle concluded that there was nothing Ahmad could have done differently, as he was driving safely at the time of the collision.
In light of these findings, Whittle recommended that medical colleges and health institutions reinforce the importance of notifying authorities when a driver poses a risk to public safety. He noted that it is crucial for medical professionals to be aware of their obligation to report such conditions and urged the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport to disseminate this information across the healthcare sector.
