A powerful cyclone swept through the Baltic states over the weekend, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals and leaving approximately 500,000 residents without electricity across Latvia and Lithuania.
In Latvia, a man was killed when part of a building collapsed in Jelgava, while winds in the capital, Riga, reached speeds of over 67 mph. The storm brought unprecedented rainfall, with some areas recording half of their average monthly totals in just one day. Services across the region were disrupted, with public transport and mobile services severely affected.
In Lithuania, a falling tree claimed another life, while more than 200,000 residents were reported without power by Sunday morning. Additionally, Estonia faced strong winds and disrupted ferry services to its islands, as the storm's impact spread into northeastern Poland, affecting over 100,000 people.
