Darlinghurst Childcare Center Receives Year-Long Rent Relief Amid Closure Threat

The Goodstart East Sydney childcare center, located in Darlinghurst, has been granted a 12-month rent waiver by the City of Sydney to avert its closure. This comes in response to significant financial losses faced by the not-for-profit center, despite high occupancy rates.
Following the announcement of the center's potential shutdown on November 26, over 60 families united to express their support, launching a petition to keep the facility operational. Lord Mayor Clover Moore stepped in, stating, "I hope this gives comfort and certainty to parents that we are committed to ensuring stability and the learning community they have built in Darlo."
It remains uncertain whether Goodstart, which also leases three other sites from the City, will accept the rent relief. Families like Tim Martin's have been vocal about the potential consequences of losing the center, with many already struggling to find alternatives due to limited nearby options.
Local resident Fiona Thatcher echoed these sentiments, noting that her 11-month-old daughter has been on the waiting list since she was only 12 weeks old. Councilor Zann Maxwell highlighted the need for childcare facilities, emphasizing the importance of supporting families in the inner city.
