On Saturday, Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi visited the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors the nation's war dead, coinciding with the 81st anniversary of Japan's World War II surrender.
Despite speculation about her attendance, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi did not join the visit. Koizumi's presence at the shrine, a site that has historically strained Japan's relations with neighboring Asian countries, drew a crowd, including some in military-style attire.
