Catastrophic 7.7 Magnitude Quake Strikes Indonesia, Leaving 47 Dead

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake rocked eastern Indonesia early Saturday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities and extensive property damage. The disaster unfolded at 5:58 AM local time, with its epicenter located 68 kilometers north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province, according to the US Geological Survey.

The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, triggered panic among residents in a region known for seismic activity. In the aftermath, authorities reported that dozens were injured, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations progress.

In response to the quake, officials initially issued a tsunami warning to coastal communities, urging residents to seek higher ground. The warning was later rescinded after monitoring stations reported no significant sea-level changes, although minor tsunamis were confirmed. Waves of up to 1.61 meters were recorded in some areas, leaving fishing boats stranded and infrastructure damaged.

East Nusa Tenggara Police Chief Rudi Darmoko noted that power outages hindered communication and information dissemination, complicating rescue efforts. Landslides triggered by the quake have blocked key transport routes, including the Trans-Flores highway, further isolating affected areas.

Rescue teams have already recovered 47 bodies, primarily from the Sikka, Manggarai, and East Manggarai regions, while over 50 individuals have been hospitalized. The scale of destruction is staggering, with at least 157 homes flattened and nearly 200 others damaged, prompting around 2,000 residents to seek refuge in temporary shelters.

Fathur Rahman, head of the Search and Rescue Office in Maumere, warned that remote villages have been buried or cut off, making rescue operations increasingly difficult. To address the crisis, authorities have dispatched helicopters and a rescue vessel to assist in logistics and emergency response efforts.

Eyewitness accounts reveal the extent of chaos during the quake. Yohanna Embu, a local resident, described the panic as people fled to higher ground amidst collapsing buildings. At St. Peter Major Seminary, students and staff escaped a collapsing roof during morning Mass, with at least one priest sustaining injuries.

The earthquake's effects were felt far and wide, impacting the nearby gateway town of Labuan Bajo, a popular tourist destination. As recovery efforts unfold, officials remain vigilant, aware of Indonesia’s history with devastating earthquakes and tsunamis.
