Devastating Floods in Nepal: Death Toll Reaches 579, Thousands Missing

The catastrophic flash floods in Nepal have claimed at least 579 lives as of August 28, 2026, with nearly 2,000 individuals still unaccounted for, prompting ongoing search efforts across the affected areas.

According to the Nepal Police, over 4,500 people have been rescued since the disaster struck. Among the missing are 183 Indian tourists, with 85 confirmed safe while 98 remain missing. The Nepal Tourism Board noted that nationals from over 30 countries are among those reported missing, including 65 from the U.S., 61 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 35 from Australia, and 33 from the U.K.

Scientists are investigating the causes behind the unprecedented flooding in the Bhotekoshi river, particularly as no rainfall was recorded in the region at the time. Preliminary findings suggest that an ice-and-rock collapse may have created a temporary blockage in the Lhende Khola river, leading to a subsequent surge of water and debris into the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.

The Nepal Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has indicated that satellite imagery supports this theory, showing signs of an avalanche and rockslide originating near the Nepal-China border. The department has warned of ongoing flood risks, urging residents to remain vigilant.

In response to the disaster, the Nepal government initially declined foreign assistance but has since reversed its stance due to diplomatic pressures. Prime Minister Balendra Shah clarified that international specialists will now assist with specific rescue operations, including DNA testing and forensic examinations.
