DHL Unveils Major Expansion at Shenzhen Air Cargo Hub

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

DHL Express has made a significant leap in its logistics operations by investing $205 million to enhance its air cargo hub at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, effectively tripling its parcel shipment processing capacity. This expansion marks DHL's largest investment in China to date and is part of a comprehensive upgrade initiated in 2022.

The upgraded facility now spans 237,000 square feet and is equipped with advanced technologies, including high-speed sorting systems, automated storage solutions, robotic arms, and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). These innovations form an intelligent logistics system that streamlines unloading, storage, sorting, handling, inspection, and monitoring processes.

With this expansion, DHL aims to facilitate more direct cargo flights from Shenzhen to key cities across the Asia-Pacific and globally. Previously, the company operated over 30 weekly outbound flights from the hub, allowing for direct shipments to other DHL air hubs or transportation by road to its Central Asia Hub, from where goods can be flown to its global network.

The new gateway is expected to create over 1,000 jobs, positioning DHL to better support the growing demand for cross-border trade, e-commerce shipments, and time-sensitive international express services. John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, emphasized the importance of flexible and reliable logistics networks in adapting to evolving global supply chain dynamics.

As the air traffic from China to the U.S. normalizes following a tumultuous period marked by shifts in American trade policy, DHL is also adapting by introducing a dedicated air route connecting Shanghai, Bangkok, Bahrain, and Brussels. This route aims to enhance connectivity for goods moving between China and critical markets in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, catering to the rising demand from customers in these regions.
