Director Dave Green Reflects on the Unbelievable Journey of 'Coyote vs. Acme'

The anticipated film 'Coyote vs. Acme' has had a tumultuous journey, and its director, Dave Green, is still grappling with the reality that it is finally set for release. Initially filmed between March and May of 2022 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the movie was shelved by Warner Bros. in 2023 as part of a strategy to cut costs. This move left the cast and crew uncertain about the fate of their labor until Ketchup Entertainment stepped in, acquiring the film in March 2025.

Green, who has been attached to the project since 2019, expressed his shock upon learning the news of the acquisition. “I heard about the news that Ketchup had acquired the movie maybe 24 hours before everyone else found out, and I absolutely could not believe it,” he said. For a time, he had come to terms with the possibility that the film might never see the light of day. “It was a wild ride,” he recalled, marveling at the support the project received from fans and fellow filmmakers.

Based on a satirical New Yorker piece, 'Coyote vs. Acme' explores the humorous legal troubles of Wile E. Coyote as he sues the Acme Corporation for its defective products. Green, a self-described child of the '90s, has drawn inspiration from iconic cartoons like 'Tiny Toon Adventures' and 'Animaniacs,' aiming to capture the irreverent spirit that defines the Looney Tunes universe. “We tried to carry that torch the best we could,” he noted, emphasizing the film's blend of slapstick comedy and clever storytelling.

The film features a mix of live-action and animation, reminiscent of classics like 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' Green worked closely with storyboard artists to meticulously plan each scene and incorporate a life-size Coyote puppet, crafted by renowned puppeteer David Barclay, into the production. This careful coordination allows for seamless interactions between the animated and live-action elements, a feat that proved challenging but rewarding during filming.

Despite its comedic tone, the script by Samy Burch addresses deeper themes, reflecting on the trials of navigating a corporate landscape that often prioritizes profits over people. Green believes that the film's messages resonate even more powerfully today, given the shifting dynamics within the entertainment industry. “It felt surreal,” he commented, acknowledging how the film's narrative mirrors real-world corporate struggles.

As 'Coyote vs. Acme' prepares for its theatrical debut on August 28, Green remains grateful for the chance to share the film with audiences. “It is a miracle that we are sitting together, getting to talk about the movie today,” he concluded, underscoring the collective effort that brought this project to fruition.
