Dystopian Drama 'Love Is the Monster' Explores a Grandmother's Unthinkable Choices

Costa Rican filmmaker Neto Villalobos Brenes is set to unveil his latest film, Love Is the Monster, a gripping dystopian thriller that dives into the depths of love and desperation. Featuring acclaimed actress Paulina García, known for her role in Gloria, the film will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 15.

The narrative centers on a grandmother who, after losing contact with her daughter, strives to reconnect with her six-year-old granddaughter. However, the fragile bond is shattered when the child is kidnapped for ransom. The film poses a powerful question: how far will a grandmother go to protect her loved ones?

In a departure from his previous comedic works, Villalobos Brenes draws from personal loss, stating, “A few years ago, I lost the person I loved most, my mother.” He reflects on the challenges that drove his mother to find solace in her granddaughter, igniting the film's core theme of familial love under duress. García echoes this sentiment, asserting that love knows no limits, especially when a child's safety is at stake.
