Emporia Drops Charges Against Teacher Arrested for Clapping at Meeting

The city of Emporia, Kansas, has decided to dismiss charges against Lux Claridge, a local high school teacher who was arrested for clapping during a city data center meeting. Claridge confirmed the news via email, stating, "Today, I was informed by my attorney that the city has dropped my charges… unless the county is feeling froggy."

This incident occurred on July 22, when Claridge attended a city commission meeting aimed at discussing a controversial hyperscale data center project planned for 1,000 acres near their home. Initially intending to voice opposition, Claridge was removed from the meeting by police after clapping in support of a presentation.

Following the arrest, which resulted in charges of disorderly conduct and interfering with law enforcement, Emporia shifted to virtual meetings and halted public comments, citing public safety concerns. However, the city plans to resume in-person meetings and public comments in September. A vote on whether to ban hyperscale data centers is anticipated in November, contingent on a County court ruling.
