Community Unites to Maneuver 360-Tonne Hirosaki Castle Keep

By Editor • August 25, 2026 • 1 min read

In a remarkable display of community spirit, approximately 1,800 individuals in northern Japan gathered to physically pull the 360-tonne keep of Hirosaki Castle. This monumental effort is part of a project to return the historic structure to its original placement after it was relocated in 2015 for repairs to its earthquake-damaged stone wall.

Utilizing a traditional method known as hikiya, which involves placing buildings on rollers for easier movement, participants were selected through a lottery system, ensuring a diverse group could contribute to this significant endeavor. The relocation process is set to continue until the end of August, as the community works together to restore this iconic landmark.
