Ex-Police Officer Dies in Prison While Serving Sentence for Murder

By Editor • August 24, 2026 • 1 min read

Sean Grayson, a former sheriff's deputy in Illinois, died in prison on Sunday at the age of 32 while serving a 20-year sentence for the second-degree murder of Sonya Massey.

Grayson had been incarcerated for just six months when he passed away, as confirmed by his attorney, Daniel Fultz. The cause of death remains unclear, although Grayson was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2023.

The incident that led to his conviction occurred on July 6, 2024, when Grayson fatally shot Massey after she called 911 regarding a suspected prowler. Bodycam footage from the event prompted protests across several cities, including Chicago and New York City.
