In a diplomatic gesture aimed at mending relations with the United States, France has expressed regret over a recent social media post that criticized U.S. voting behavior at the UN General Assembly. This move paves the way for Aurélien Lechevallier, France's new ambassador to the U.S., to officially assume his role in Washington.

French Mission's Regret

On Friday, the French permanent mission to the United Nations issued a statement indicating their regret regarding an online post on X (formerly Twitter) that questioned the U.S. commitment to human rights. The post followed a contentious vote in which the U.S. joined a minority of countries opposing the extension of Volker Turk’s term as UN human rights chief.

U.S. Response and Appointment Delays

The U.S. State Department welcomed France's apology, with an official acknowledging the statement and expressing eagerness to collaborate on shared values. The approval of Lechevallier, who is currently the chief of staff for French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, has been stalled since the diplomatic spat, despite such confirmations typically being a formality.

The tensions arose after the U.S. voted alongside countries like North Korea and Russia against Turk’s reappointment, prompting France to criticize the U.S. stance. Following the backlash from the U.S., a representative walked out of a UN Security Council meeting in protest, highlighting the strain caused by the incident.
