Family Escapes Devastating Fire in Boyup Brook, WA

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

A family in Boyup Brook, Western Australia, narrowly escaped tragedy as a fire ravaged their home early Sunday morning. Lisa Fawcett was asleep when the blaze ignited, reportedly due to a bar heater placed too close to a couch.

Ms. Fawcett's son alerted her to the danger as thick black smoke filled his room. In a frantic escape, he had to leap from a window when retrieving belongings became impossible. "It was just so quick. It was like three or four minutes to get to the reality of what was actually happening," she recalled.

Firefighters responded to the emergency call around 10 AM, but the damage was extensive, leading to the house being completely destroyed. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is still investigating the cause, but preliminary assessments suggest an electrical fault or improper heater placement.

While the family managed to escape with minor smoke-related injuries, the emotional toll is significant. "I lost my partner seven years ago, so all the engagement rings and personal things… are gone," Ms. Fawcett lamented. She expressed deep sorrow over the loss of sentimental items, including family antiques and photographs.

Following the fire, supportive neighbors assisted in disconnecting gas bottles and moving Ms. Fawcett’s car. Temporary accommodation has been arranged for her and her family in Bridgetown as they begin to rebuild their lives.
