This year’s Fantastic Fest is set to captivate audiences with an eclectic mix of films, kicking off its 21st edition with the highly anticipated screening of Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil.’ Scheduled from September 17 to 24 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas, the festival promises a unique cinematic experience that embraces unconventional storytelling.
Among the highlights of this year’s lineup is the U.S. premiere of Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of ‘Carrie,’ reimagined for the small screen, alongside the North American premiere of ‘Victorian Psycho’ and Martin McDonagh’s latest offering, ‘Wild Horse Nine.’ Another standout is ‘Beware Boiúna,’ a thrilling survival film set in the depths of the Amazon jungle, which will also debut on opening night.
Fantastic Fest is renowned for unearthing hidden cinematic gems, particularly through its Burnt Ends section, which showcases low-budget films from emerging filmmakers. Festival director Lisa Dreyer emphasized the commitment to discovering and promoting new talent, stating, “We really focused our programming efforts on bringing new discoveries to our audience of discerning and passionate cinephiles.”
This year, attendees will have the opportunity to explore a diverse array of films, from dark comedies to intense dramas, including the world premiere of ‘Adult Supervision’ from Sweden, which examines the chaotic dynamics of a school trip chaperoned by fathers. The festival will also feature the North American premiere of ‘The Birthday Party,’ where a woman’s 40th birthday takes a shocking turn when three uninvited guests challenge her identity.
Additionally, the lineup includes a captivating mix of international titles, such as the North American premiere of ‘The Blood Countess,’ which explores the tale of a vampire in modern-day Austria, and ‘Dog God,’ a controversial Thai film banned for nearly three decades that critiques blind faith. The festival also plans to showcase a restored version of ‘Blood Feast,’ the world’s first splatter film, ensuring a blend of nostalgia and innovation in this year’s offerings.
With a programming strategy focused on launching the careers of new directors, Fantastic Fest 2026 is an exciting event for genre enthusiasts and film lovers alike. As Dreyer noted, festival-goers can expect to see the next wave of breakout filmmakers, all gathered in one place to share their vision and creativity.
