The San Sebastián Film Festival is set to open with Fatih Akin’s latest work, 'Ghost Song' ('Geister'), on September 18. This film marks a significant moment for Akin, known for his accolades including a Berlin Golden Bear for 'Head-On' and a Golden Globe for 'In the Fade.'

'Ghost Song' is described as a poetic drama exploring themes of loss and longing, featuring a young love story that transcends the boundaries of dreams and reality. The plot centers around Aisha, a 17-year-old who visits Elias in his dreams following her untimely death, igniting a passionate romance.

Akin humorously compares the film to a blend of the beloved 'Ghost' starring Patrick Swayze and Jean-Paul Sartre's existential themes, stating, “It’s a love story, but not like the Patrick Swayze-Demi Moore film.” With this film, Akin aims to appeal to younger audiences, reflecting a shift in arthouse cinema.

The festival will also feature a gala where filmmaker Werner Herzog will receive the prestigious Donostia Award, adding a strong German influence to this year's event.
