Flash Floods in Nepal Leave Travelers Missing and Communities Devastated

A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal's Rasuwa district has resulted in at least 95 confirmed fatalities and left hundreds of international travelers unaccounted for. The disaster, which struck on August 26, 2026, is believed to have been triggered by an earthquake that occurred early in the morning, leading to an avalanche that blocked a river and unleashed torrents of water along the Nepal-Tibet border.

According to Xinhua, major casualties were also reported in the Gyirong Port region due to mudslides originating from the Nepalese side. Local authorities have closed the main road to Kathmandu, a vital route connecting the capital to western Nepal and India, raising concerns about access and transportation.

The Nepal Tourism Board has issued a strong advisory urging tourists to avoid affected regions and to postpone any non-essential travel, particularly to Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
