Flavio Bolsonaro Proposes Debt Ceiling in Presidential Campaign

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro's presidential campaign is making waves with the announcement of a proposed debt ceiling aimed at curtailing Brazil's public spending if he secures victory in the upcoming October elections. Economic adviser Adolfo Sachsida shared this plan via social media, emphasizing that the initiative would enhance Brazil's fiscal credibility.
Sachsida, a lawyer and economist who recently joined the campaign team, explained that the implementation of a debt ceiling would automatically trigger spending cuts if the public debt exceeds a predetermined threshold. "We will approve a ceiling for public debt," he stated in a video, underscoring the need for a sustainable fiscal trajectory.
With the presidential race heating up, Bolsonaro stands as the primary challenger against incumbent leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. A recent Nexus poll indicates a tight race, with Lula at 46% and Bolsonaro closely trailing at 45%. The economy is pivotal in this election, with rising public debt—currently about 82% of Brazil's GDP—and concerns that a Lula victory could lead to economic downturn.
Critics of debt ceilings argue that such measures restrict government spending during crises, potentially undermining essential social programs. Sachsida's previous role as minister of mines and energy under Jair Bolsonaro further connects the campaign to historical fiscal policies, notably the 2016 constitutional amendment that limited federal spending increases.
As the election approaches, economic strategies will be crucial, highlighting the contrasting approaches of Bolsonaro and Lula, especially in a climate influenced by international factors, including the stance of former U.S. President Donald Trump toward Brazil.
