India and China Forge New Path in Boundary Talks

In a significant step towards addressing their long-standing border dispute, India and China have concluded talks between their Special Representatives, resulting in an eight-point consensus aimed at enhancing bilateral relations. The discussions, which took place recently, focused on advancing boundary delimitation and establishing a framework for hydrological data sharing.

Both nations have committed to organizing a meeting next month involving experts on trans-border rivers, a priority for India. Additionally, they plan to introduce two new military communication channels and set up meetings between senior military commanders to foster dialogue.

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the progress made over the past two years in maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control. This ongoing normalization of relations is underlined by Doval’s recent visit to Beijing, preceding India's hosting of the BRICS Summit on September 12, and the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping after a seven-year hiatus.

While the developments are promising, questions remain regarding the specifics of the border delimitation process. Both sides have not clarified the areas to be delineated or the implications for the 2005 agreement that set the framework for these discussions. Transparency in these negotiations will be crucial as both nations seek to build trust with their respective publics during this delicate process.
