Former Defense Minister Calls for Elections Amid Ukraine's Governance Crisis

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's recently ousted Defense Minister, has sparked a significant political debate by advocating for wartime elections in the country. This marks a notable challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's leadership since the Russian invasion in 2022.
In a video address, Fedorov, who was dismissed in July, expressed concerns about a "crisis of governance" in Ukraine, emphasizing that "democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia." He argued for a legal and safe mechanism to restore democratic processes, despite current laws that prohibit elections during wartime.
Though he did not announce his candidacy, recent polls suggest Fedorov could potentially outperform Zelenskyy in a runoff election. His remarks come on the heels of protests in Kyiv, where demonstrators have rallied in support of Fedorov and called for the resignation of Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
Fedorov, who played a crucial role in strategizing against Russian forces, hinted that his reforms in military procurement may have led to his removal. As he pushes for change, Zelenskyy is moving forward with the confirmation of a new Defense Minister, Yevhenii Khmara, amid growing public discontent.
