French-Colombian Soldier Abducted by Guerrillas in Colombia

The Colombian military reported on Thursday the kidnapping of French-Colombian soldier Jose Olger Melo Charry, a member of the French Foreign Legion, in early August. Melo Charry was seized on August 6 while traveling through Narino, an area heavily influenced by guerrilla factions.
The culprits are suspected to be from the Estado Mayor Central (EMC), a dissident group formed from the remnants of the FARC, which had previously disbanded following a peace agreement in 2016. The group is reportedly led by Ivan Mordisco, a notorious figure on Colombia's wanted list.
According to Army Colonel Mauricio Osorio, Melo Charry, who has served in the French military for four years, was on leave in Colombia when he was targeted. The kidnappers likely recognized his military affiliation, which led to the abduction. The Colombian government, under President Abelardo de la Espriella, is intensifying efforts to combat armed groups that utilize kidnapping for extortion and leverage against authorities.
