French-Colombian Soldier Abducted in Colombia's Narino Region

The Colombian military has reported the kidnapping of Jose Olger Melo Charry, a soldier in the French Foreign Legion, who was taken hostage on August 6 in Narino, a guerrilla-dominated area of southwestern Colombia.
According to a military report, the abductors are believed to be members of Estado Mayor Central (EMC), a dissident faction of the former FARC guerrilla group. The EMC is notorious for its involvement in drug trafficking and illegal activities.
Colonel Mauricio Osorio revealed that Melo Charry, who has served in the French army for four years, was on leave in Colombia when he was seized. The group behind the kidnapping is reportedly led by Ivan Mordisco, one of Colombia's most wanted guerrilla leaders.
In response to the ongoing violence, President Abelardo de la Espriella is pursuing a policy of direct confrontation with armed groups, seeking assistance from the United States to tackle the escalating crisis.
