From Copywriting to Bar Ownership: A Russian's Journey of Reinvention in Buenos Aires

In a world turned upside down by war, many Russians have found themselves starting anew far from home. Among them is Ksenia Borovinskaya, who left Moscow with her two children and dog in March 2022, seeking refuge from the conflict. What began as a struggle to adapt has turned into a remarkable story of resilience and unexpected success in Buenos Aires.

Ksenia's journey began as a skilled copywriter with a solid career in Russia, contributing to various projects and publications. However, when her employer demanded public support for the war, she and her colleagues chose to leave instead. After a brief and difficult stay in Armenia, where she struggled with the language and climate, Ksenia received a call from a friend in Argentina, leading her to relocate in search of a fresh start.

Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, Ksenia faced new challenges, including applying for political asylum due to her antiwar beliefs, which put her at risk in Russia. Initially, she secured work as a waiters' assistant, a far cry from her previous professional life, but it was a stepping stone that allowed her to explore new opportunities in a foreign land. With her children’s encouragement, Ksenia began to dream of opening her own bar.

In late 2024, she took a leap of faith, borrowing $15,000 from her ex-husband to fund her venture. The bar, named Babushka, is more than just a place to grab a drink; it’s a cultural hub that hosts poetry readings, film screenings, and concerts, fostering a sense of community among Russian-speaking residents. Ksenia even cultivated a library filled with Russian literature, making it a unique spot for locals and expats alike.

The road to establishing Babushka was fraught with obstacles, including bureaucratic hurdles and personal setbacks, such as losing her passport right before signing the lease. However, Ksenia's determination and resourcefulness saw her through, and within months of opening, the bar began generating income, allowing her to support her family.

Today, Babushka stands as a testament to Ksenia's courage and adaptability. Even as economic challenges rise, she continues to provide affordable options for her customers, all while managing the day-to-day operations with the help of her children and friends. Each day is a reminder that stability can be fleeting, but resilience and creativity can pave the way for new beginnings.
