Reviving Marble Waste: Studio Lievito's Innovative Urban Furniture

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

Studio Lievito has unveiled a remarkable collection of modular urban furniture named Marmifere, inspired by the historic Ferrovia Marmifera di Carrara, a railway established in the 19th century to transport marble. This collection pays homage to Ugo La Pietra’s experimental designs and Archizoom’s avant-garde concepts, merging sculptural elements with functionality.

The Marmifere modules are designed for public spaces, inviting relaxation and engagement. The first module reflects the Ravaneti, massive marble waste piles, featuring a concave profile that offers a comfortable reclined seat on one side and an inclined climbing wall with recycled plastic holds for children's exploration on the other. Hollow cavities within the modules create miniature tunnels when aligned, encouraging playful interactions.

The second module draws inspiration from quarry terraces, presenting staggered levels for diverse seating arrangements, while also serving as a climbing structure. This design not only enhances urban landscapes but also fosters a sense of community and connection to Carrara's rich geological history. By integrating recycled marble into their designs, Studio Lievito brings a tactile, interactive element to the urban environment, inviting citizens to engage with the legacy of Italian marble.
