In a recent update, the government has announced an increase in petrol prices by Rs0.39 per litre, bringing the new price to Rs341.98 per litre. High-speed diesel (HSD) has seen a larger hike of Rs2.40, now costing Rs370.69 per litre.
This change, effective August 25, comes amid ongoing fluctuations in global oil markets, influenced by geopolitical tensions, particularly between the US and Iran. HSD prices have dropped significantly from their peak of Rs520.35 in April, while petrol prices also surged earlier this year.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik noted the shift towards daily price adjustments by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to better reflect international trends. These price changes predominantly affect middle and lower-middle-class consumers, as both fuels are essential for transportation and power generation.
