Gabriel Diogo, a São Paulo-based illustrator, is capturing the vibrant essence of Brazilian life through his art, particularly focusing on the rich culture surrounding football. Recently, he received a thrilling opportunity from Nike to create posters celebrating his beloved Corinthians, a club that plays a central role in his identity. "It was a dream come true," he expressed, highlighting how deeply intertwined football is with his personal narrative.
Diogo's journey to this point has not been straightforward. After studying graphic and digital design at the Istituto Europeo di Design and working in the industry since 2013, he found himself feeling unfulfilled. In 2019, he decided to pivot towards illustration, a passion he had not previously explored. Since then, his daily practice has revitalized his creative spirit, leading to a joyous output that reflects the warmth and vibrancy of Brazil.
His illustrations are infused with the sociological significance of football, which he describes as more than just a game. “Football represents personal relationships, life stories, and family memories,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of cultural symbols like flags and jerseys. Each piece he creates aims to pull viewers into the scene, making them feel part of the community rather than mere spectators.
In addition to his commercial work with brands like Itaú and ASICS, Diogo is dedicated to his personal project, Série Cotidiano, which encapsulates the memories of everyday Brazilian life. He believes that while the message of his work may not always be clear, it resonates differently with each individual, enabling viewers to connect with their own experiences.
Despite his success, Diogo remains grounded, acknowledging the challenges faced by those from the outskirts of São Paulo. His advice to aspiring artists from similar backgrounds is to persist through difficulties and continue honing their craft. "Your work is also your identity, and no dream is too far away," he encourages.
