Great Britain showcased its athletic prowess at the European Championships, with Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith leading the charge in a spectacular display of sprinting talent. Hunt celebrated her unprecedented fourth gold medal as she anchored the mixed 4x100m relay team to victory, clocking an impressive time of 39.97 seconds, a new European record. The 24-year-old sprint star, who held up four fingers in triumph, expressed her elation to BBC Sport, saying, "Oh my gosh, I am over the moon. I think to finish it off with some of my best friends in the sport is incredible."
Asher-Smith also made headlines, securing her eighth gold and 11th medal overall, solidifying her status as the most decorated athlete in the championship's 92-year history. The team, which included Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes, further emphasized Great Britain's dominance in the sprinting events.
In the women’s 1500m final, Georgia Hunter Bell displayed remarkable control, winning gold and adding to her remarkable year, which already included titles from the world indoors and Commonwealth Games. This victory marked her seventh international medal in just two years, a significant comeback after stepping away from athletics for five years.
Although Great Britain amassed nine gold medals during the event, they fell just short of topping the overall medal table, finishing behind Italy, who clinched the final gold in the men’s 4x400m relay by a mere 0.03 seconds. Matthew Hudson-Smith, who contributed to the silver medal in that event alongside his teammates, has now surpassed legendary athletes like Christophe Lemaitre, becoming the most decorated male competitor in championship history with nine medals.
The championships, hosted in Birmingham, concluded with Great Britain earning five medals in a swift 76 minutes, bringing their total medal count to 19. Long jumper Jazmin Sawyers, recovering from injury, was close to gold, achieving a personal best of 6.99 meters but finishing just shy of Italy’s Larissa Iapichino.
In the women’s 4x400m relay, Yemi Mary John, Lina Nielsen, Nicole Yeargin, and Emily Newnham secured a silver medal, finishing behind a strong Dutch team led by bronze medallist Femke Bol. Following their triumphs in the mixed 4x100m relays, Asher-Smith praised teammate Hunt, calling her “the real life GOAT” as she celebrated her seventh gold a decade after her first.
Hunt, who aims to be “iconic” by pursuing all four sprint titles this week, continues to exceed expectations and solidify her place in the sport, while Hunter Bell, at 32, is making waves in her quest for a quadruple gold at upcoming championships.
