Gippsland Youth Spaces Faces Closure Amid Funding Crisis

In a concerning turn of events, Gippsland Youth Spaces in Morwell, a vital refuge for at-risk youth, may soon close its doors if it cannot secure essential operational funding. Established in 2018, the center has been a lifeline for marginalized young people in the Latrobe Valley, offering crucial services such as free meals, laundry facilities, and a safe space for socializing and personal development.

Despite its importance, the center has struggled with consistent funding, relying heavily on grants and donations from local businesses. Board member Jewel Burchell-Robins expressed her frustration, stating that the organization has had to plead for financial support each year. She warned that closing the youth hub could have dire consequences for the community, including increased youth crime and mental health issues.

“The young people in our region don’t have anywhere else to turn,” Burchell-Robins said, highlighting that the center has become a crucial safety net for local youth. Last year, Latrobe Valley reported nearly 2,500 incidents of youth-related crime, underlining the urgent need for ongoing support.

Local businessman Ray Massaro, who has financially backed the organization for years, echoed these concerns, arguing that the state government must step up its funding. He noted that the young people who frequent Youth Spaces are forming meaningful connections, which are essential for their development.

Executive Officer Trevor Carstein warned that without immediate funding, the organization’s future is bleak. He revealed that they have already made significant cutbacks, including selling their fleet of buses and canceling external programs like camps and educational trips to Parliament House. Carstein emphasized that to remain operational, the center requires approximately $500,000 annually.

While a government spokesperson stated that over $9 million has been allocated since the organization’s inception, they also noted the expectation for Gippsland Youth Spaces to become self-sufficient in the future. However, with the current funding crisis, the sustainability of this critical service remains in jeopardy.
