Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to Lake America Amid Trade Tensions

The order, which alters the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), impacts how the lake is referenced in American maps while leaving Canadian naming conventions untouched. According to Google, users in the U.S. will now see "Lake America," while Canadians will continue to see the familiar "Lake Ontario," and users outside North America will have both names available.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a sign proclaiming "Lake Ontario: Now and Always" at Fifty Point Conservation Area, emphasizing that the global community will always recognize the lake by its original name. New York's Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul and Vermont's Republican Governor Phil Scott have also criticized the renaming, with Scott calling it "petty and disappointing."
